[Poster] Digital Human Debate: Designing and Observing Intelligent Virtual Agents

As AI acts on our behalf, accountability becomes critical. While building an AI fosters psychological ownership, autonomous behavior dilutes responsibility. How these dynamics interact when users design an intelligent virtual agent (IVA) but cannot control it at run time remains unclear. We introduce Digital Human Debate (DHD), where teams design autonomous digital humans that debate without human intervention. In a six-month study with nine students, we found that although participants felt live speech was beyond their control, they actively traced unexpected behaviors back to their own design choices. Being unable to intervene did not eliminate responsibility but shifted it from run-time control to ownership of the prior design.

AIが人間の代理として発話する機会が広がるにつれ、その発話への責任を誰がどのように引き受けるかは重要な課題となる。先行研究は、ユーザーによる設計への関与が所有感や責任感を高める一方、AIの自律性が責任を人間から遠ざけうることを示してきた。しかし、ユーザーが知的仮想エージェント（intelligent virtual agent: IVA）を自ら設計し、実行時には介入できない状況で、両者がどのように両立するかは十分に明らかになっていない。この条件を調べるため、本研究はDigital Human Debate（DHD）を提案する。DHDでは、チームが顔と声を持つIVAであるデジタルヒューマンを事前に設計し、本番では発話を修正できないまま自律的にディベートさせる。日本の中高生9名・3チームを対象とした6か月間のケーススタディで、設計物、ディベートログ、インタビューを分析した。その結果、参加者は本番の個々の発話を自分の制御外として捉えながら、ペルソナ設定の過度な反復や設計意図からずれた応答を、ペルソナ、知識、テストなど自らの事前設計に結びつけて解釈していた。すなわち、介入できないことは責任を消すのではなく、その焦点を実行時の操作から事前の設計へ移していた。本研究はDHDを、ユーザーが設計したIVAの自律的な振る舞いに対する責任形成を観察する研究形式として提示し、設計後の定期的なレビューが責任ある関与を促しうるという設計指針を提示する。

落合陽一　Yoichi Ochiai

筑波大学図書館情報メディア系教授、東京大学准教授。1987生，2015年東京大学学際情報学府博士課程修了（学際情報学府初の短縮終了），博士（学際情報学）．日本学術振興会特別研究員DC1，米国Microsoft ResearchでのResearch Internなどを経て，2015年より筑波大学図書館情報メディア系 デジタルネイチャー研究室主宰．2015年，Pixie Dust Technologies.incを起業しCEOとして勤務．2017年から2019年まで筑波大学学長補佐，2017年から大阪芸術大学客員教授，2020年デジタルハリウッド大学特任教授，金沢美術工芸大学客員教授，2021年4月から京都市立芸術大学客員教授を兼務．2017年12月より，ピクシーダストテクノロジーズ株式会社による筑波大学デジタルネイチャー推進戦略研究基盤代表及び准教授を兼務．2020年6月デジタルネイチャー開発研究センター・センター長就任．専門はヒューマンコンピュータインタラクション・バーチャルリアリティ・人工知能領域の学際的展開，特に音響・レーザーホログラムの計算・応用領域に強い興味を持つ．
