[Paper] Designing for Ring Camera Use: Spatial Interaction Strategies of Blind and Low Vision People

Blind and low vision (BLV) users rely on touch to build spatial understanding of the physical world. However, much information cannot be accessed through touch alone. Camera-based assistive systems help bridge this gap, yet how BLV users coordinate their hands and bodies across tactile and non-tactile media remains unclear. We investigate the spatial interaction strategies that BLV users employ when accessing information through a finger-worn ring camera. Eleven BLV participants accessed four media that varied in tactile cues through a Wizard-of-Oz system, which delivered information audibly at multiple granularities. Participants consistently used one hand as an anchor while adjusting the camera-wearing hand three-dimensionally, with the anchor serving as both a spatial reference and a postural support. Retrieval spanned scales from torso-level framing to fingertip-level calibration, yet intermediaterange capture remained particularly challenging. We discuss design implications for ring camera-based systems that support BLV users’ spatial interaction with diverse media.

[Paper] From Coarse Search to Precise Alignment: Auditory Guidance for Non-Visual Target Acquisition in VR

Non-visual reaching in near 3D space requires both coarse localization and fine correction near the target. In this study, we compared multiple auditory guidance techniques in VR to investigate how sound can support non-visual target acquisition. Our findings showed that verbal directional guidance provided robust support, while spatial audio and on-demand guidance complemented different stages of the reaching process.

[Poster] Toward Automated Commentary System for Blind Football: An Interview-Based Study of Visually Impaired Spectators’ Information Needs

Blind and low-vision (BLV) people often rely on live commentary to follow sporting events, yet the information required to make blind football accessible to BLV spectators is not yet fully understood. We investigated the information needed to understand the state of a blind football match and derived design implications for automated commentary systems.
We interviewed 11 BLV people with experience of watching blind football. Participants consistently identified three essential types of information: which player and team had possession of the ball, what occurred during play, and why fouls were called. Ball-possession information was considered time-critical and therefore needed to be delivered in real time, whereas detailed descriptions of play and explanations of fouls could be provided during subsequent stoppages. Participants also emphasized that commentary should preserve the sounds of the match and vary in detail according to spectators’ experience and preferred ways of following the game. These findings provide a basis for designing timely and adaptive automated commentary that improves access to blind football without obscuring its distinctive auditory environment.
