■ Summary
In an age when a smartphone delivers a polished photo in an instant, this study seeks to bring back the pleasure of making pictures by hand. We draw on deco, the decorative practice rooted in Japanese “gal” (gyaru) youth culture, and bring it to the camera lens. They propose Functional Decoration: a state in which decorating the camera is the photographic effect, so that ornament and image can no longer be separated. The team 3D-printed a modular, block-based jig that lets anyone mount everyday materials—rhinestones, colored cellophane, pipe cleaners—in front of a lens, and ran workshops with 42 participants aged 6 to 54. Through a continuous cycle of making, shooting, and viewing their own filters, participants generated collaboration and creativity across generations and relationships.
■ Why it matters
HCI has largely valued effort as a way of expressing care for others. This work points instead to the gal practice of investing effort for oneself while celebrating that effort together with peers. Functional Decoration offers a gentle form of resistance to efficiency-first technology, returning the photographic process to the user’s hands. At a moment when generative AI can draw or “photograph” anything instantly, the study reaffirms the value of embracing imperfection and enjoying trial and error.
